Although I have been an artist ever since I can remember, my first formal art
instruction took place at Central Catholic High School where I was fortunate to
have a great art teacher. Sister Mary Genevieve taught us the many facets of
art. Many of her students went on to become professional artists. Armed with
this solid foundation, I continued to develop my skills in all media at Bowling
Green State University. Exposed to different philosophies of art by my fellow
students and art history, I began to focus on my own approach simply to portray
the world in a realistic yet unique way.
Following graduation with a B.F.A degree, I took additional post-graduate
painting courses at The University of Toledo. After a short stint in commercial
art, I was drafted into the United States Army. Stationed in Korea, I derived a
wealth of material for paintings, and the resulting Korean Series
completely sold out.
Shortly after my discharge, I was honored with a Gallery Eight One Man
Show at the Toledo Museum of Art and sold most of the available paintings.
About the same time, I met and married my wife, Jane. All three of our children,
Jennifer, Matt and Alex, have a creative side. Encouraged to enter the American
Watercolor Society Annual, I was accepted on the first submission. Three more
Annuals would follow, culminating in two awards - the American Watercolor
Society Certificate of Merit for Painting and the Grumbacher Award of Merit for
Outstanding Contribution to the Arts - for the painting, Weathered
Relics.
Although I am painting full time now, I feel
my years in commercial art with demands for specific results has
only sharpened my skills especially in the area of ink and pencil
drawing. However, if I had to pick one medium, I would choose
watercolor. Although it is the most challenging, it is also the most
versatile.
